McKinley Health Center
McKinley Health Center Last weekend, my throat was feeling a little rough on the one side. This was particularly troubling because it started on the same night that The 1975 came to the State Farm Center. After a couple days passed after the concert and I realized that the throat scratchiness was probably not caused by all the singing along at the concert, I figured that I should probably get this problem checked out by a doctor. After all, a college student spends much time around other people that may be sick, as well. On Monday morning, I called McKinley Health Center and scheduled an appointment for Tuesday. One of the nicest things about the McKinley Health Center is the fact that if you need to visit for anything at all, your visit is covered by the student fees that you pay each semester. This means that students do not need to hesitate to see a doctor about anything that may hold them back from being the best student that they can possibly be. From The Black Sheep Upon arriving at Mckinley Health Center, I checked in at one of the computers and was instructed about which clinic I would be seen in. The staff was extremely nice and ready to assist with anything at all. Once I was in the exam room, it was no time at all and I was with the doctor. After some examination, the doctor told me that I had pharyngitis. She said that I would need to take medication for the next few days, and I would be much better soon. Along with the doctors visit, the medication was also paid for by my student fees. This weekend, I can look back on my visit to McKinley with gratitude. I am very thankful that Illinois is home to such a wonderful health facility. On such a large and expansive campus as this one, it is always nice to know that you have such a great resource for your health. Since cold and flu season is just around the season, it is likely that I will be taking another trip to McKinley in the future. As much as I would love to stay away from McKinley, I know that I am in good hands with their wonderful staff. Jacob Class of 2019 Iâm an Advertising student within the College of Media. My hometown is a place called Fairmount, Illinois, which is about 30 minutes from campus. I began my Illinois journey in the Division of General Studies.

American Dreams and Nightmares Free Essay Example, 750 words
Sur American Dreams and Nightmares It takes no character to judge, but a sharp eye. The implication of a judgement does not necessarily have to anchor on the personality of the involved characters since individuals can judge others irrespective of their wanting lifestyles. Apparently, such a perception may be oriented to the expectations of the American dream, hence outlining the probability of the development of the American nightmare. The short story by Oââ¬â¢Conner assists in the shaping of this perception. Developing a criticism against others needs to be anchored on the ideal virtues embraced by the involved persons. People tend to rush towards judging others when their own personalities are a reflection of the exact errors they criticize. The case of the grandmother in Oââ¬â¢Connerââ¬â¢s short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, articulates on how persons can be blind on their shortcomings but remain keen on exposing others. The grandmother has a library of challenges, but seems to be offering them a blind eye. Her opinions may be described to be oriented on the attainment of the American dream while in reality she is living the nightmare of the same. We will write a custom essay sample on American Dreams and Nightmares or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now She desires to present herself as being perfect whereas her shortcomings remain visible for all persons. It may be argued that the grandmother expresses double standards in reference to the rest of the opinions shared by others. The case of the African American child the family witnesses while on the way to Florida. She had cautions the children of speaking ill of their country but fancied the ill scenario of a britches-free child. She does not consider her excitement to mount to making inferior observations of her country. Such incidents of double standards assist in the shaping of her life. The American dream was categorized of success in three critical areas that were considered to define the ethos of the people. They included a regard for the freedom of the people, a sense of equality and the eventual touch of opportunities for all. However, the quest towards the realization of these interests eventuated into the realization of the opposite perception of the same. It may be argued that the American dream was a good motive that was undertaken in an ill way after being embraced by hypocrites. The lifestyle shared by the grandmother may be considered to summarise the entire concern. Achieving the American dream considered determination and a sense of social harmony. People were anticipated to share the expressions of victory and hope in regards to providing opportunities for all. Additionally, attributes such as the degradation of others, or discrimination in relation to the considered shortcomings were to be discouraged. Additionally, citizens were anticipated to cherish their freedom. Such values assisted in the shaping of the entire package of the dream (McDonald, 78). However, the dream may be regarded to have been eclipsed into a nightmare. The freedom was abused with crime prevalent to the extent of persons living in fear in their free state. The sense of equality was dismissed by critics who were keen to expose the shortcomings of others, best exemplified by the grandmother in the short story by Oââ¬â¢Conner. The perception of opportunities for all was turned into a myth that considered such advantages being shared among the elite. The grandmother admits that indeed children living in lower sides are disadvantages by saying ââ¬Å"little riggers in the country dont have things like we doâ⬠(Oconnor, 34). Such observations allows for the visualization of the American nightmare shaping from the American Dream. On that note, it may be argued that the grandmother is living the American nightmare that is guided by the virtues of the dream shared in her childhood. Her characters at old-age while being contrasted to her childhood perceptions allow for the shaping of the considered impression. The modern generation seems committed to achieving the prospective advantages mentioned by the dream in their unique way. The family seems concerned with the utilization of the available opportunities through their trip to the city. The portrayed contrast in beliefs allow for the reflection on the ideal impression generated by the different citizens regarding the American dream. The evaluation of the population allows for the visualization of the depths upon which the American dream is regarded. Some members of the aged population, such as the grandmother, tend to belief that their period of living the dream are obsolete. They instead propose and proceed to enforce the dream to their children and those that found their community. The younger generation seems to appreciate little about the dream, instead focusing on the avenues that may better their livelihoods (Obama, 26). The implication of the entire perception remains best captured under a composition of persons of different interests and aspirations. In conclusion, the work of Oââ¬â¢Conner assists in the shaping of the path upon which the American dream was transited into being its nightmare. Characters such as the grandmother assists in shaping the path via their double standard approach to life. Their interest in judging the rest of the population without paying attention to their hypocritical lifestyles remains the best reference to the verification of the transition of the American dream. For the dream to succeed, persons need to learn the art of developing criticism against others. Prior to criticizing others, it is ideal to ensure that the considered virtues are upheld by own self. Psychology Personality Psychology Exam - 1709 Words
Personality Psychology EXAM 1 PART ONE: SHORT ANSWERS 1. Is being accurate the same as being reliable? Is it the same as valid? Being accurate is a measurement of how close data is to its real value. An accurate result is true (most real) to its real value. It differs from being reliable. Reliability is the measurement of consistency in results each time a test is repeated. For instance, if one is able to get the same results during an assessment more than once then the measurement is more than likely reliable. Validity on the other hand is the extent to which a test measures what it is designed to measure. 2. National drug control treatment strategy critical analysis Free Essays
Drug abuse is a serious health problem causing illnesses or injuries affecting every community in every major social problem of crime, violence, and child abuse. Both pharmacological and environmental factors play a vital role in the treatment of drug abuse and correlated disorders focusing on the structure and dynamics of the total personality. Focus on the three areas of health care, criminology, and education were recently emphasized on the policy created by the Presidentââ¬â¢s National Drug Control Strategy based on the core principles of: stopping drug abuse before it starts, healing Americaââ¬â¢s drug users, and disrupting the market. We will write a custom essay sample on National drug control treatment strategy critical analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now (ONCDP 2007). The programs efficiency on the first two principles most likely will lessen the population with little injections on enhancements of culture change. Is there a relationship with the drug abuse and American culture? Looking on their idea of disrupting the market, I fear it will disrupt not the market but the modesty and integrity of the marginal police workforce involved in the trade. Trade means money. Operations cannot account to the last centavo. Trading means gain from deal. It could set precedence for corruption. Can Americans endure both drug trafficking, corruption and terrorism at the same time? How does one label the three wars now? The ongoing intelligence collection and interagency review of counterdrug-intelligence missions determined how federal, state, and local drug control efforts were misled on the third principle. This does not stop newcomers becoming drug traffickers where intercepted illegal substances appraised drugââ¬â¢s black market value. Raising the prices generates higher income for drug traffickers and for the network of accomplices created for the disruption. (Riley 1996). This will ultimately result to corruption in terms of network integrity that may hold contempt to the existing policy in particular. Trust is very unmanageable if one works with the other side. It is between good and evil now. Human personality is usually disrupted by the evil oneââ¬â¢s surroundings bring. It will eat you like a disease. Although the population of drug abusers will lessen temporarily due to the inflation, they will see to work with the alternative of prostitution and other forms of choice of slavery to get what they wanted. It will give rise to two criminal acts: prostitution and government corruption. The leadership and direction to state and local governments must not be limited to the relationship between drugs and cost. It must be focused on the reduction of the availability of illegal drugs by prohibition of its entrance and manufacture within the country itself. Maybe there should be a review on the policy dedicated to this type of arrest. War on drugs does not mean alliance and allegiance on the ones whom you wage war. Integrity is very important. Stop the entrance and the manufacture, you will lessen the abuse. The government shall not hide their inability to find resolution to the entrance and manufacture by legally trading with the illegal traffickers. It does not make sense pulling your state to damnation. The first two principles are correlated: the beginning and the end of drug abuse. Heal the abuser when it starts, a rosebud, and heal the ones considered as hard core, a full bloom rose. Observed what becomes of a full bloom rose, it withers and dies! Drug treatment being integrated with the national health care program is a very good move indeed. It expands access to abuse treatment, its choices, and awareness through massive education. The approach raises drug addiction as a public health issue by the availability of abuse prevention and treatment services before reaching the criminal justice system. The cornerstone of the policy does not implicate any change in the culture system of the Americans including programs for a new climate of belongingness and lesser independence. If you want to control your family, donââ¬â¢t make policies and acts that will make the stand of the youth stronger. Independence is very personal. It contains a lot of meaning and a lot of action. Why canââ¬â¢t the government take a look on their policies for families? What are the basic psychological reasons of adapting drugs? Is it not support and belongingness? If they canââ¬â¢t find that relationship within the scope and context of their respective family then they will continue to seek external factors that can satisfy what they need no matter how comprehensive the treatment and the programs of the government for drug abuse. (Brannen Oââ¬â¢Brien 1996).For me the plan is not that realistic. The President has to consider listening to the voice of the American people like when he led them to war in the Middle East for conducts of terrorism. We are not just talking about functions, economy, and egos here. We are talking about lives: Lives of the American people. Violence can never be a cure for peace. Revenge will always be there. We have to find a way to resolve these wars without producing more body bags. The goals are simply not achievable. He got to listen to the voice of the American people and the voice of his inner conscience. References Brannen, J. Oââ¬â¢Brien, M. (1996). Children in families: Research and Policy. The Sheep free essay sample
He looked up at the class from the wrinkled handout of John Updikes AP and asked us what we thought the narrator had really meant by quitting his job at the end of the story. His question lingered in the air, prodding us with what Id come to recognize as the standard tone of sophomore English teachers, one that managed to simultaneously convey both resigned disappointment in our lack of class participation and a quiet sense of hopefulness that someone, anyone, had taken enough interest in the topic to actually pay attention. I glanced around the room, wondering how a story with such a simple yet powerful message could have passed over the heads of my classmates. I immediately found my answer in their faces, all of which were clearly bored, most of which were busy silently declaring their apathy by huddling over their desks in lame attempts to pretend they werent text messaging. We will write a custom essay sample on The Sheep or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I turned my focus back to Mr. Miller, whose face remained calm and unsubtly expectant. I raised my hand and answered him, He doesnt want to be a sheep anymore. Before I met Mr. Miller, I didnt have much faith in people. In my young and naive mind, people werent complex; when lines became blurred, most simply closed their eyes and grabbed onto the tail of the person in front of them. Id always prided myself on being the type of person who could peg anyone down. A good twenty-minute conversation was all I felt I needed to thoroughly evaluate someone, to determine which category theyd fall under on the unwritten yet universally understood list of mundane personality types that Id always just assumed existed. Then I strolled into my first day of sophomore English, and unknowingly signed up for the beginning of my slow but integral journey toward self-awareness. I had never encountered anyone like him in the entirety of my semi-sheltered life; his whole demeanor completely baffled me. His unabashed refusal to wash his car, claiming that to do so was merely a shallow display of wealth and possession, astounded us all. He kept a custom-made stamp that proudly declared, This is the most original paper I have ever read, which he used to mark all of our essays with when he felt we hadnt put the effort into our work that he knew we were capable of. His colorful choice of wardrobe, most memorably the lovely beginnings of an unraveled sweater he chose to flaunt on a bi-daily basis that resembled oatmeal in both color and texture, often left me stunned into silence, which is quite a rare feat. He preferred climbing mountains in Katmandu to skiing in the winter. He staunchly declared Valentines Day a nationwide corporate scam, and promoted a stuffed bear that a fawning student had gifted him to the task of erasing the daily lesson plan off of the white board. He was quirky, he was bold, he was impossible to dislike. Most importantly, he was so much more than all of that. Mr. Miller used his own inimitable wealth of knowledge to make us aware of concepts that few of us would ever have been able to explore on our own. He pounced on e very opportunity that presented itself to broaden our horizons beyond the sometimes narrow guidelines of our society, and his persistence in manifesting the immeasurable power of genuine self-knowledge and individuality was endless. He denounced the media for creating unrealistic and shallow standards for the youth of the nation, introducing us instead to inspirational literary characters who possessed intellect, honesty, and valor. While my miniature world cheered about conformity and social acceptance, Mr. Miller pointed out the flaws of my mentality and showed me what I would be capable of as soon as I grabbed a pen and scribbled my name outside of the dotted line. It took me seven months, an open mind, and a John Updike story to finally understand Mr. Miller and the methods behind his so-called madness. He, unlike the many sheep that cluster together along the aisles of this world, was able to do what seems simple enough on paper but much less so in practice: he acted exactly as he was and went after the things he wanted; critics be damned. I walked out of class that day, my AP handout curled up in the palm of my hand, with the realization that it was time for me to do the same. Some say shoes dont stretch and people dont change, but I know better. I finally found my own way of breaking out of the pasture.

Cyber-Security essays
Cyber-Security essays Condoleezza Rice, President George W. Bush's national security advisor said," The very technology that makes our economy so dynamic and our military forces so dominating also makes us more vulnerable." Recently, President Bush proposed $37.7 billion for Homeland Defense to fund several areas related to security. As one of the most critical areas related to the nation, Cyber-Security will receive a significant portion of these funds. (State of the Union Address, 2003 January 28) According to the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, Cyber-Security refers to "the protection of information against unauthorized disclosure, transfer, modification, or destruction, whether accidental or intentional." Cyber-Security is any product or action that attempts to secure a wired or wireless network. These networks encompass a wide range of communication infrastructures, including wired and wireless internal office networks, external private networks, traditional public networks, the Internet, and the various networks used by local, state and federal governments. The Department of Homeland Security is trying to combine the ability to classify and estimate current and future threats to the homeland, outline those threats against our disadvantages, inform the President, issue timely warnings, and immediately take appropriate preventive and protective action. To make any headway on the road to greater cyber-security, the government feels that the public and private sectors must work together. Richard Clarkes National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace is hoping to construct a network operations center that will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to evaluate Internet health and accompany the National Cyberspace Security Response System and Department of Homeland Security. In addition, it is hoping to create a point of contact between the government ...

Why You Keep Failing Your Exams.
Why You Keep Failing Your Exams. You Start Studying Too Late. Whether or not you want to hear it, it takes months to prepare adequately and score really well on a test like the ACT, SAT, GRE and other standardized, high-stakes test. Why? They do not simply test your content knowledge, which could theoretically be crammed into your head a week before the test. (i.e. Who was Ronald Reagans press secretary? How do you say the word, eradicate in French?) Standardized tests often measure your ability to reason. Predict. Infer. Draw conclusions. And in your everyday, regular school life, you may not be practicing those skills. So, in order to get better at them, you need to brush up on them early and often. Repetition is key and cannot be mimicked the week prior to the test. Fix It: Get a study schedule put together several months before your exam. Write down study times into your calendar and commit yourself to them firmly. Let go of the idea that you can wing it and get the score youd like. I promise youll be grateful for prepping early for your major test! You Dont Prepare in a Way That Suits Your Learning Style This may be news to you, but everyone learns in different ways. Some people learn material really well sitting at a desk in a quiet corner, rehashing all their notes with headphones set to white noise. Other people learn best in a group! They want to be quizzed by friends, laughing and joking along the way. Still others prefer to type all their notes over again while they play a recorded lecture of the class review. If youre trying to force yourself to learn in a way that doesnt suit your learning style, youll doom yourself to fail your exams. Fix It: Take the learning styles quiz. Sure, its anecdotal and not 100% scientific, but it may help give you an idea about how you learn best. Find out if youre a visual, kinesthetic or auditory learner and prepare in a way that can actually help you learn. You Dont Learn the Ins and Outs of Your Exam Did you know that the ACT is very different from the SAT? Your vocabulary quiz is going to be an incredibly different type of test than your midterm exam. Perhaps youre failing your exams because you havent quite caught on that you need to prepare in different ways for different kinds of tests. Fix It: If youre taking a test in school, find out from your teacher the type of exam it will be ââ¬â multiple choice? Essay? Youll prepare differently if so. Get a test prep book for the ACT or SAT and learn the strategies for each test. Youll save time (which leads to earning more points) by familiarizing yourself with the test content prior to testing. à You Pressure Yourself. Nothing is worse than test anxiety. Well, maybe childbirth. Or being eaten by sharks. But mostly, nothing is worse than test anxiety. For days before the test you can think of nothing else. You pressure yourself straight into hives. Youve decided that nothing ââ¬â NOTHING ââ¬â matters except a perfect score and youve sweated and cursed and hoped and despaired over your upcoming exam. And after having taken the exam, you realize that your score was absolutely awful and you wonder what you couldve done differently. Fix It: Practice steps to overcome test anxiety from your desk right before the exam. If that doesnt help, draw a timeline of your imagined life. (Birth ââ¬â Death at 115 years old.) Place major events on it: first learned to walk; lost a grandparent; got married; the births of your 17 children; won the Nobel prize. Now, place a tiny dot of your test date on your timeline. Doesnt seem so enormous, now does it? Although a test can make you fraught with nerves, it helps to put it into perspective. Will you remember it on your deathbed? Highly unlikely. Youve Labeled Yourself a Bad Test-Taker Right now ââ¬â this minute ââ¬â stop calling yourself a poor test-taker. That label, called aà cognitive distortion, does more harm than you know! Whatever you believe yourself to be youà will become. Even if youve takenà and failedà tests in the past, your future testing self is not a guaranteed failure. Figure out the mistakes you made on those tests in the past (Maybe you didnt study? Perhaps you didnt sleep enough? Maybe you didnt learn the test strategy?) and give yourself the chance to rock this test by preparing. Fix It:à At least 30 days prior to the exam, write the words, Im a great test-taker! on post-its and stick them everywhere - your bathroom mirror, the dashboard of your car, the inside of your binder for school. Nerdy, but totally worth it. Write it on the back of your hand. Make it your screensaver and your computer password. Live it for the next month and watch your brain slowly begin to overcome the label youve given yourself in the past.
